Born in Sofia, she got her Master in Composition and music writing and her final diploma as a concert pianist in Bulgaria. Since 1996 she lives in Luxembourg, where she studied contemporary music-composition and music-informatics with Claude Lenners.
She has written more than 600 works in various music genres. Some of her works are published by SCHOTT MUSIC International, Luxembourg Music Publishers, Editions L’octanphare, Furore Verlag, and her pedagogical work is published by her own edition.
Recently she realized a CD «The Voyager» by the label SoloMusica.de, and a concert tourne of 8 concerts, and her last CD “Crystal Dream” with the pianist Romain Nosbaum by label GEGA NEW was with a big international success and press acclaim.
In 2001, she composed the music for the musical book “Wann de Piano rose gëtt”(The Angry Piano), published by CID Femmes and PHI edition. In 2007, her composition “Gladius” for electric guitar and instrumental ensemble was commissioned for the Cultural Year in Luxembourg and the Greater Region. At the same time she was granted the “Cultural Award 2007” from the municipality of Hesperange. That same year, she was also a jury member of the International Composition Competition “Valentino Bucchi” in Rome, Italy.
In 2008 and 2009, two works for brass ensembles “My name is Taurus” and “El Bosque Encantado” were written and performed. The premiere of her instrumental theatre piece “Le Retour des Papillons” (“The Return of the butterflies”), a multidisciplinary project with original music, pantomime, light effects and video elements, took place in 2010 in the Luxembourg Philharmonie. The year 2011 was dedicated to a complex pedagogical project – the musical theatre for children “The Bunny in Love” and an illustrated musical book with a CD. The same year she composed “To meet a Bird” for violin and piano and “Magnifico” a concert piece for solo trombone and ensemble, performed in the Luxembourg Philharmonie in 2012. In 2013 she composed the lyric cycle “Love Songs” inspired by persian love poetry, especially for the ARS NOVA ensemble which she founded with Maria Miteva. She got a commission for the orchestral piece “Just a While” by OPL orchestra, premiered in January 2015 and conducted by Duncan Ward.
Her first opera “The Dark “was performed in the Casemates -Luxembourg, in June 2016 by United Instruments of LUCILIN and Donatienne Michel-Dansac with big success.
Her second non staged opera «Ermesinde’s Long Walk» in 2017 is performed in Luxembourg Philharmonie by Ensemble ARS NOVA LUX. «Melusine – l‘image mystique» is commissioned and performed by orchestre MODUS 21 in Graz, Austria, with conductor Erich Polz. Both chamber opera The LOVERS and JEALOUSY are staged in State Opera Stara Zagora in 2018 with the conductor Alex Sanso. Actually she has new opera project with libretto by Corinne Kohl.
Many of her compositions are performed also outside Luxembourg – in Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Bulgaria, Poland, Tcheque Republic, Greece, Turkey, USA, Singapore, Russia, Spain, Andorra, Brasilia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Kosovo, Switzerland, Serbia, Austria, Australia, Portugal, Croatia.

Albena Petrovic is President/Founder of the International Composition Competition “Artistes en Herbe” (“Budding Artists”) under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of Luxembourg. Already with her fifth edition, the Competition is unique in its kind in Western Europe – children of tenders’ age may compete in the Junior category, and in Senior category adult composers are invited to compose music which will enrich the pedagogic repertoire for children.
