Stoyan Angelov

Stoyan Angelov graduated from the State Academy of Music in 1956 majoring in Conducting under Professor Assen Dimitrov. He worked as composer and conductor of the children, marionettes and ballet group of the Palace of Children (1955-69). He also conducted the ensemble at the Electric Appliances Plant in Sofia (1955-59) and the Female Voices Choir of the librarians ”Morphova-Prokopieva” at the St. Cyril and Methodius National Library in Sofia (1958-60). He worked also as methodologist of non-professional music art activities at the House for Folklore (1958-60) and as editor-in-chief of the musical programmes and ensembles of the Bulgarian National Radio (1960-91). He taught Music Analysis at the State Academy of Music and at the Institute for Music and Choreographic Cadres – Sofia. He also taught at summer courses for conductors. As a conductor (since 1950) he has given symphony and chamber concerts, ballet and opera performances with most Bulgarian symphony and chamber orchestras. With the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra he recorded for the Bulgarian National Radio and for the recording company ”Balkanton” works by Russian, German and other composers. He also premiered works by Bulgarian composers such as Parashkev Hadjiev, Pencho Stoyanov, Georgi Kostov, Alexander Tekeliev, Dobti Dobrev or Nayden Gerov. His recordings of the operas The Noblewoman Vera Sheloga, Mozart and Salieri and Snow-White by Rimsky-Korsakov won him an international recognition and were published by eminent recording companies like EMI, Harmonia mundi, Fidelio or Capriccio. He is not only member of the Union of Bulgarian Composers, but also member of the Union of Bulgarian Journalists, the Union of Bulgarian Music and Dance Professionals and Chairman of the Club of Russian Music Friends at the Russian Culture and Information Centre in Sofia.
He wrote in different genres: stage music, orchestral music, children’s and choral songs, theatre music for over 20 plays, etc. He also orchestrated works by foreign composers. He is a laureate of Prix Brno.
