Rumyana Valentinova (Stancheva) Marton is a leading composer in the Bulgarian musical space, and in particular in theatrical music. Her work is always distinguished by innovation, harmony, melodiousness and bold experiments in every musical form.
The composer was the first to introduce polystylism into the modern Bulgarian school as a basic principle in her creative expression, according to the opinions of Prof. Ivan Hlebarov and Prof. Konstantin Karapetrov. She also created Opera mono performances for the first time in Bulgaria (“Mini Rock Opera”, “Iliad”, “Medea”, “Medea’s Dreams”).
Rumyana Marton graduated from the National Academy of Music “Prof. Pancho Vladigerov” – Sofia with a specialization in composition under Prof. Marin Goleminov and piano under Prof. Dora Lazarova. For additional vocal specialization, she took courses with Prof. Konstanza Kirova.
Associate Professor of Music at VITIZ (today NATPHIZ “Krastyo Sarafov”, 1971-2012) in the Faculty of Performing Arts, Department of “Stage Speech”, where she teaches the disciplines “Solo Singing”, “Musical Analysis”, “Vocal Ensembles”, “Musical Training”, “Piano” for the acting classes for dramatic, puppet, musical theater and movement theater. Generations of actors have been trained by Assoc. Prof. Marton in the above-mentioned courses. In the years 1999-2012 she was a guest lecturer at the NMA at the Vocal Faculty, Department of “Pop and Jazz Art”. Her pedagogical portfolio includes the disciplines “Vocal Ensembles” and “Solfezh”. Rumyana Marton is an author of vocal, chamber, ballet, film and theater music. Her composing career in the theater (work in over 150 performances) is connected with leading theater directors – Lyuben Groys, Vili Tsankov, Encho Halachev, Krasimir Spasov, Ivanka Dimitrova, Mladen Mladenov, Nadezhda Seikova, Anastas Mihaylov, Nikolay Lyutskanov, Zdravko Mitkov, Nikolay Georgiev, Bogdan Krasinski, Alexander Iliev, etc.
In her active creative years, she mainly recorded with the ensemble “Polyrhythmia” led by Prof. Dobri Paliev, FSB (Rumen Boyadzhiev, Petar Slavov, Konstantin Tsekov, Ivan Lechev), Women’s Chamber Orchestra with conductor Rositsa Batalova. The concert performances of her works include leading singers and instrumentalists: Pavel Gerdzhikov, Resa Koleva, Nadya Afeyan, Hristina Angelakova, Svetlana Kotlenko, Bozhana Prodeva, Alexander Mutafchiyski, Maria Tsvetkova-Madzharova, Milena Ognyanova, Bozhidar Noev, Dora Lazarova, Dobri Paliev, Simeon Shterev, etc. Among the great actors whose voices remain in the recordings of Rumyana Marton’s musical works are those of Todor Kolev, Klara Armandova, Boris Arabov, Kolyo Donchev, Gergana Kofardzhieva, etc.
For the music to Shakespeare’s productions, directed by Luben Groys, she is included in the prestigious Oxford multi-volume edition “Shakespeare Music Catalogue” (Gooch, Bryan N. S., Thatcher, David – Eds., Oxford University Press, vol.1-5, 1991). She is the only female composer from Bulgaria whose name appears in the Shakespeare music catalogue. The other representative from Bulgaria is Prof. Pancho Vladigerov.
As a composer, Rumyana Marton also appears in the Bulgarian encyclopedic publications “Who is who in Bulgarian culture – composers” (1997, Kraev, Georg – Comp., Sofia, Music, 1997); “Who is who in Bulgaria” (Kitsevski, Nikolay, Radulov, Raycho. – Comp., Sofia, KK Trud, 1998); “Encyclopedia of Bulgarian Composers” (Vulchinova-Chendova, Elisaveta. – Comp., SBK, Sofia, 2003, pp. 180-181) and “Encyclopedia of the Bulgarian Theater. Actors, directors, playwrights, set designers, composers, teachers, choreographers, critics, theaters, institutions, press.” (Collective, KK Trud, 2005).
Rumyana Marton has participated in a number of international events such as the “International Composers’ Workshop Bulgaria-Netherlands” (1970, 1981, 1983), organized under the auspices of UNESCO and the Bulgarian Chamber Orchestra. Her music has been performed in France, the Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland. Italy, Poland, Romania, Georgia, Turkey, Canada, the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, Macedonia, Germany.
