Georgi Petkov

Georgi Petkov was born in 1961 in Gabrovo. He graduated from the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Plovdiv. During the period 1986-1998 he worked as a conductor of the folk orchestras in the State Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances “Dobrudja” – Dobrich and the National Folklore Ensemble “Philip Kutev”, as well as as the chief conductor of the professional folklore ensemble “Gabrovo”. From 1999 to 2018 he was the artistic director and conductor of the women’s choir “Bulgarian Voices – THE ANGELS”, with which he won the prestigious Amazon.com “US Guest Artist of 2000” award. Since 1995 he has been a composer-associate of the Bulgarian National Radio. Georgi Petkov’s conducting appearances include over 1000 concerts in Bulgaria and abroad and over 20 hours of recording production. He has made recordings for BBC-London, CNN, JARO Medien, ZDF, Balkanton, Bulgarian National Radio, Bulgarian National Television, BTV and other Bulgarian and international media.
His compositional output includes over 400 titles, most of which are distributed by international music companies. He is the author of music for dramatic works, music and dance productions, orchestral pieces, vocal works for choral and chamber vocal ensembles. Georgi Petkov has won international awards for his choral songs. Winner of the Latin GRAMMY 2018 – as composer, arranger and discographer of the album “Al este del cante” – Arkanhel and “New Bulgarian Voices”. As a composer and arranger, he has worked in several dozen international music projects, invited and co-authored with world-famous musicians – Adriano Celentano, Bobby McFerrin, Enrique Morente, Arcángel, Roberto Fonseca, Antonio Forceone, Grzech Piotrowski, Chieftains, Mikhail Alperin and Moscow Art Trio, Huun-Huur-Tu from the Republic of Tuva, Okai Temiz and Burhan Okal from Turkey, Fanfare Chokarlia from Romania, Boyan Ristic Brass Band from Serbia, Savina from Greece, Nicolas Lenz from Belgium, etc.
Georgi Petkov is a professor, doctor of musicology and musical art. Since 1998. he has been a lecturer in the Department of Music of the New Bulgarian University, teaching music-theoretical and practical courses related to musical folklore, computer sheet music programs, instrument science, and general university courses for knowledge and arts. His research activities are in the field of ethnomusicology, genre musical hybridity, composition, vocal techniques and choral conducting.
He is the creator and leader of the original University Mixed Choir “Folk-Jazz Formation” of NBU.
Founder and conductor of the polyphonic Folk Choir at the National Music School “L. Pipkov” – Sofia.
Creator and leader of the Vocal Trio “Evridika”.
Creator of the choir “New Bulgarian Voices”.
Member, as well as Chairman of the jury of dozens of our and international competitions and festivals.
He develops active charitable and public activities. Since 2014, he has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Music and Folklore Union “Orpheus Spring”, and since 2023. he has been elected its Honorary Chairman.
